#11 - Womble

The monster that wombles in wait...
...based on the word submission and poem by Matt.

"Dandelions"

by Matthew Valois

Singing trees and talking leaves
wimble and jimble
as Jack & Jill play

Hide and seek,
running and hiding
from the monster
that wombles in wait
to gobble them up.

But weebles, keebles
and the Keebler Elves
rescue them from becoming
inevitable womble grub,

Stuffing them with cookies
and chocolate milk whims
as they fly to other fantasy worlds.

They mark their dreams
in the awaiting arms of earth,
soaking up grass and dirt
with no discrimination

Between spring flowers
and yellow weeds
we call "Dandelions."

#10 - Friggler

This is my tenth sketch in ten days. My goal is 100 sketches in 100 days! So keep the nonsensical names coming for me to illustrate! It is such a great way to challenge my creativity. After day 100 I plan on selecting specific sketches for refinement, and possibly for a book.

Jaime submitted the word "Friggler" and this is what popped into my mind:

The friggler lives in frigid climates way up north. Some are silvery blue, some are a light mint green, and others are a soft feathery lavender. Frigglers are able to stay warm because of the little wiggling strands of hair-like appendages that are in constant motion all over their body. This keeps the beast toasty warm by the friction generated and casts a subtle glow all around them. The only parts of a friggler that get cold are their little fingers, toes and faces. To keep these parts of their body warm, they sneak and steal thread and other pieces of clothing from unsuspecting explorers to knit each other finger gloves, toe socks and scarves to protect them from the chilling conditions.

#9 - Awfulcodos

This is part two of Yucky Moldy. Yucky Moldy is made of Awfulcodos. Awfulcodos are zombie cows. This makes Yucky Moldy a very expensive product. Would you want to get close to this?

#8 - Yucky Moldy

The word "Yuckymoldy" is submitted by Wes.

My Yucky Moldy is a fragrance marketed to the discerning zombie. Some zombies just don't smell enough to attract a mate. And lets face it, when a zombie outbreak happens, it happens fast. You may be competing with only a handful of zombies at first, but in a few hours that could grow to hundreds, then thousands, and millions. So a zombie needs something to put him ahead of the pack and to out-smell his competitors.

Tomorrow we talk about how Yucky Moldy is made.

#7 - Moley Moley

Today's sketch is inspired by Stephanie who says "My son called watermelon 'moley moley'!"

A moley moley is a little creature that hatches from overripe watermelons and have seeds for eyes. They are very quiet and harmless creatures that burrow deep beneath the vines of the watermelon patch, creating an intricate series of tunnels that they build entire cities in.

#6 - Babdee

Today's sketch is inspired by the word "Babdee". Golbahar submitted the word saying that it is "what my nephews used to call my Dad."

Babdee sounds very jolly and loving and wise to me. The name of someone that children love to admire and be around. In my mind I picture a small little village full of children who love to dress up as their favorite animals year round (not just for Halloween). They run and play and cause harmless mischief all over the village. Afterwards they all run and sit with Babdee and tell him of their adventures, to which he smiles, laughs and ask them questions about. Maybe these children are orphans and Babdee is someone that mentors and guides them as they grow up.

#5 - Pruith

Today's sketch is inspired by Elizabeth who submitted the name "Pruith".

Pruith is a duchess. I really don't know that much about her. We don't seem to mix in the same circles. I think that Drizzle (in the previous post) could do some spying for me... however she doesn't like humidity and spends most of her time indoors.

#4 - Drizzle

Today's word is "Drizzle", submitted by Abe.

Drizzle is a little lazy, absentminded cloud who hovers just in range of the tops of people's heads. He never dissipates, but rather rolls about from place to place sprinkling the ground. If you try to get his attention, he just looks at you with his little beady eyes, unable to stop or speak before looking elsewhere. Some people (mostly girls) think he is cute and try to catch and hug him, but their hugs pass right through.

He he... perhaps he has a little bit of mass because his little hand moved to graze the top of this guy's head.

#3 - Tiptadee

Today's word is "Tiptadee" submitted by Theresa.

The word instantly put an image of a chimney sweep into my mind, and I have to admit that my cat, Fizgig, was partial inspiration. "Tiptadee" just sounds like a sweet little British chap who comes by to sweep your chimney. I think this goes back to my Mary Poppins-watching days of childhood. :)

#2 - Slapbuggy

I've started drawing quick sketches of characters for silly words inspired by friends. Judy Waddle submitted: "Slapbuggy - what Tim used to call the flyswatter."

My initial thought was of a slap happy baby buggy. :P But when I started to draw, this guy came out. He he... I picture that I have snuck up on a bug with a flyswatter and much to my surprise... this guy isn't having any more of that! He has his own swatter and considers himself to be a "slapbuggy." Too bad that swatter isn't going to do much good, although we might have a duel. Maybe we should have a ceremonial duel and then peacefully depart.... and hope he doesn't notice my sewing needles on the way out and decide to upgrade. :P

#1 - The Hansclamper

A quick sketch for Tammy who says that her son, Matt, couldn't say "clothes hamper" when he was little. Instead he said "Hansclamper".

This is my version of the Hansclamper. He is half hamper, half monster. His job is to pick up after little boys and girls dirty clothes when they are at school (and when they are home if they are brave little children... although the poor guy has a tendency to frighten them and to sometimes mistake a child or a small pet as laundry and in they go!). His hands are stainless steel and easy to clean if they get muddy or sticky with left over ice cream and other messes.

Abby the Mermaid Sketch

This sketch is for Abby, the adorable daughter of my close friend Jessica. I hope you like it Abby!

Heffalumps, NotNOranges, Frogs and Castles

Hello All! It's been far too long since my last post! I have been busy with getting ready to go to Boston, and then enjoying being in Boston. I have returned to Dallas, and am ready to catch up on a lot of things. Boston was GREAT! I really love that city. I was a speaker at a conference for a session that was titled "I Am a Designer and I Draw Pictures All Day." That is EXACTLY what I am. *laugh* The presentation went well and I spent the rest of the week with some friends in Lawrence, MA.

The friends I stayed with are the same friends that I created the NotNOrange book and the Heffalump set for. Sandy did some really cool things with them! I am going to have to purchase the wire and magnets that the Heffalumps are hanging from for future projects.

Jaime and Sandy also gave me a really cool gift of a frog that I am already drawing pictures of to be part of the NotNOrange and Heffalump adventures. :) He is so cute! I need to figure out a name for him... Sandy also showed me how to make really cool little cling art decals out of the sketches I create.

When I was at the airport waiting to fly out to Boston, I sketched this castle that was in my terminal. How cool is this castle! It reminds me of something that you might find in a Miyazaki film!

It was a wonderful trip and I am dedicating myself to posting more often now that I am back. :) I hope everyone is having a great week!
